For years, we have been told about how teeth need fluoride. For this reason, a majority of people use toothpaste containing fluoride and even use fluoridated tap water. Let us discuss what does fluoride do for teeth and the benefits of a dental fluoride treatment.

What is Dental Fluoride?

It is a substance found in your teeth and bones. It can also be found in water, soil, plants, rocks, and air. It is a mineral that is often used in dentistry to strengthen the enamel on your teeth. It helps in the prevention of cavities. In the United States and many other nations, it is also added in modest amounts to public water sources. Water fluoridation is the term for this technique.

It is mostly utilized in the context of human health to promote dental health. It can be found in your local water supply and a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) items, such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, and supplements.

If you are prone to cavities, your dentist may recommend using a fluoride-containing mouth rinse. These rinses usually have a higher fluoride concentration than over-the-counter choices.

The Benefits of Fluoride for Teeth

If you are wondering what does fluoride do for teeth, then here is how it helps teeth fight tooth decay: prevention of bacterial overgrowth and mineralization of teeth.

The Prevention of Bacterial Overgrowth

Fluoride has been demonstrated to inhibit the expansion of germs that may contribute to tooth decay. Fluoride, an ionic element, lowers the pH in the mouth, making it more acidic and hence less hospitable to germs. Dental fluoride has been discovered to inhibit three types of oral bacteria: Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Porphyromonas gingivalis.

The Mineralisation of Teeth

Fluoride interacts with the teeth to generate fluorapatite, a mineral that helps to mineralize the teeth. Mineralization is a chemical hardening process that protects teeth from demineralization (breakdown or loss of minerals).

Interestingly, despite the fact that fluorapatite is not a natural component of teeth, it is advantageous and has not been found to harm them. Fluoride supplementation causes fluorapatite mineralisation, which helps the teeth resist damage from food, drinks, and microorganisms.

While dental fluoride does help in maintaining healthy teeth, its intake should not be more than a certain level. Experts recommend that it should not be taken more than 10mg per day. Your dentist will always recommend that you use fluoride toothpaste, and in some cases, may even suggest a fluoride treatment, but they know what amount can cause harmful side effects and will always use and prescribe the safe dosage.
